We have been bursting at the seams to share some incredible news with all of you here at Bat Cave Road Farm. After months of planning, planting, and working hard to cultivate a space that gives back to nature, we are officially recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat® by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF)!
This milestone means the world to us. When we started this journey at the farm, our goal wasn't just to grow food or tend to the land; it was to become stewards of the ecosystem that surrounds us. Achieving this certification confirms that we have successfully created a sustainable environment where local wildlife can find food, water, cover, and places to raise their young.
What This Means for Bat Cave Road Farm
Becoming a National Wildlife Federation sanctuary isn’t just a title—it’s a commitment. By earning this certification, we’ve demonstrated that our land provides the essential elements wildlife need to survive and thrive. Here is how we’ve been transforming the farm:
- Providing Food: We’ve integrated native plants, seed-producing flowers, and berry-bearing shrubs to ensure there is a natural food source for local birds, pollinators, and mammals year-round.
- Water Sources: From our natural water features to maintained bird baths, we’ve ensured that our wild visitors always have a clean, accessible place to drink and bathe.
- Creating Cover: We’ve intentionally left brush piles, planted thickets, and utilized native ground cover to provide safe shelter for wildlife to hide from weather and predators.
- Places to Raise Young: By fostering a healthy, pesticide-free habitat, we’ve created the perfect environment for nesting birds, butterflies, and other essential species to nurture their next generation.
Why We Do It
For us, the farm has always been about connection. There is something truly magical about watching a bluebird claim a nesting box, seeing a monarch butterfly grace our milkweed, or hearing the chorus of frogs in the evening.
By choosing to manage our land in harmony with nature rather than against it, we aren't just farming; we are protecting a vital piece of the local landscape. We firmly believe that if we all take small, intentional steps—whether it’s on a hundred acres or in a small backyard—we can create a vast, interconnected network that helps our wildlife populations flourish.
A Huge Thank You
We want to send a heartfelt thank you to our community, our friends, and our family who have cheered us on, shared seeds, and helped us pull weeds along the way. This certification belongs to all of us who believe that farming and conservation go hand-in-hand.
We invite you to come by, take a walk, and experience the beauty of the wildlife that now calls Bat Cave Road Farm home. We can’t wait to see what new visitors show up as the season unfolds!
Stay wild, and thank you for being a part of our story.
